Waltham, MA, November 20, 2011: MPS O30 produced a memorable performance Sunday morning in Waltham to secure an impressive clean sweep of 2011 Division I play. A comprehensive 4-1 victory against Braintree Celtic provided an exclamation point on a fall season that saw MPS sitting at the bottom of the table after the opening two weeks of league play.

Sunday's victory was a showcase for the depth of MPS's squad. Five players were missing from their Spring championship team game day squad, their places filled by seven players who did not participate in the spring final. Besides the impressive show of talent, MPS also had strong support on their bench. All time great goalkeeper Andrew Tucker, soon to be fully fit again Bjorn Hansen, suspended GM Joe Bradley, and MPS O40 coach Sam Levy all played their part in encouraging the team throughout.

The large field turf surface helped showcase the talents of both teams. It was an entertaining game. MPS opened up in their manager's preferred 4-5-1 alignment. As is often the case, MPS absorbed some initial pressure. A catastrophic error by a to be unnamed MPS centerback almost gifted Braintree an early 1-0 lead. After that, it was all MPS in the first half.

Andy Apstein opened the scoring with a sublime right footed strike from the corner of the penalty box. Clearly, Andy had been playing possum, as he had looked a bit off the pace before forcing the Braintree Celtic defender hard left before putting it on his weaker right foot. It was a powerful well placed shot that left the goalkeeper stranded.

On the brink of halftime a long punt from MPS goalkeeper Josh Cole was latched onto after two Braintree defenders hesitated. The resulting confusion allowed for an astute MPS finish for 2-0 at halftime.

The second half found MPS struggling with the wind in their faces. Braintree Celtic pressed, which left them vulnerable. Marty M, who enjoyed a strong second half, after an anonymous first half performance drove in a fine left footed cross which was unceremoniously placed into the far corner by an unlucky Braintree defender for 3-0. Braintree scored late for 3-1 before MPS broke out one last time with Alo finishing off the day's proceedings for 4-1 MPS O30.

It was a fine overall performance from a side who seem to be aging rather gracefully.

MPS O30 Clinch Division I South Regular Season Crown

Wayland, MA-MPS O30 overcame a slow start to their Fall 2011 campaign to secure another regular season crown. MPS will face off against a yet to be determined second place side from Division I North this Sunday, November 13 at Alpine Field in Wayland. The kickoff is scheduled for 9:30 am.

If MPS win this match they will advance to next Sunday's Division I final against the winner of Braintree Celtic and NH Wanderers.

MPS O30 Week in Review

Westborough, MA: It was an eventful week off the pitch for MPS O30. After months of negotiations and trips back and forth across the Atlantic, it looked as though Manchester United had agreed in principle to a progressive player exchange agreement with MPS O30. Final details are still not finalized, but Sir Alex is clearly impressed with the manner in which MPS O30's older players are still producing. Alex Zecca has been representing MPS throughout. More details to follow...

In other news, Joe Bradley has made a fine recovery from last weekend's head injury. A bit old school in the injury department, Joe wrapped his head and headed for home. Four advil and five paper clips later, the bleeding had stopped, and MPS's resident hard man was all set. Once he gets final medical clearance, and removes the paper clips, he will be in contention for a place in the first XI.

MPS Close Out Successful Week

Boston, MA: MPS O30 climbed their way to the top of the Division I South table this week with two victories.

On Thursday evening MPS defeated Concord United 7-0. The scoreline was a bit flattering, as a stubborn Concord side held their ground through the opening 45 minutes. MPS scored a goal on the stroke of halftime to make it 3-0 and take a bit of steam out of Concord. The second half was wide open. Jeff Lavigne and Khano Smith were lively throughout. The rest of the squad enjoyed solid performances, with most everyone getting involved at some point. Josh Cole preserved the shutout.

Sunday morning, MPS picked up where they left off against Concord. Alo scored the opener off a short corner kick routine fresh from the training ground. The scoreline read 1-0 at halftime, but it had been all MPS O30.

MPS started the second half sharp again, with Alo notching his brace in the opening five minutes. It looked bad for Boston White Eagles.

Andrew celebrates another victory in style!

Shortly afterward, MPS right back Joe Bradley was caught by an errant knee to the head in an awkward collision with a White Eagles player. The medical team bound his head and sent him off for 7 staples to the head. He should be cleared for first team action in a few weeks.

MPS's defense was clearly rattled, as the proceeded to give away two quick goals in succession. MPS O30's all time wins leader, Andrew Tucker, making his season debut was beaten by a White Eagles free kick for 2-1. Not long after, MPS were caught on the break for 2-2 and alarm bells were ringing.

Thankfully, it is in the collective makeup of all MPS players to play to the end. In extra time MPS broke into the box, forced a save, with the resulting rebound being fired in, only to be hand balled out of the goal. Marty stepped up to the spot and finished cool as you like for 3-2 MPS.

It was an exciting match for both teams.

MPS looks to build on their recent success next Sunday, October 9, with a 9:00 am kickoff against Concord United.

MOM Award Winner

Wayland, MA-MPS O30 won their first game of the Fall Sunday against early league leaders Kel Kau. Philip vander Wilden secured all three points with a spectacular header from a well delivered Jeff L corner kick.

Newly promoted Kel Kau look to be a good addition to Division I South. Organized and athletic, Kel Kau were in the game throughout.

MPS opened the scoring through Jeff L in the 20th minute and probably edged the first half overall.

MPS had several chances early in the second half to build on their lead. Unfortunately those chances weren't converted. A fortuitous sequence of events led to a Kel Kau penalty with ten minutes left, which they converted for 1-1. It looked like more points dropped.

MPS veteran vander Wilden had other plans. In the 91st minute MPS earned a corner. Philip powerfully met the incoming cross, driving home a world class header.

MPS look to build on this result Thursday night as they travel to Concord for a make up of their Hurricane Irene fixture.

MPS O30 Struggle Through Opening Weeks of Fall Campaign

Duxbury, MA--MPS O30 were soundly beaten 3-1 this morning in Duxbury. A promising first half performance, highlighted by a Dan Rudolph wonder goal, saw MPS head into the interval 1-1.

The second half was all Braintree Celtic. MPS O30 have lost their way in the back four. The tried and true defensive principals espoused by the manager over the past six years have been lost on a stubborn center back's refusal to play a shade deeper and keep the play in front him. A week on the training ground and some tough decisions ahead will clear up this problem.

Last Sunday MPS O30 drew 1-1 in a competitive match with Bohemians. As the scoreline indicates, it was a closely contested contest. Marty McGeough opened his MPS O30 scoring account, but truth be told, all the front players struggled with their fitness and finishing throughout.

The Fall season could be a struggle for MPS O30. Their tried and true 40+ crowd have shown their age through the opening two weeks. Their younger players, who have never quite carried their weight, are struggling with their commitment, fitness, and overall quality of play.

MPS will look for a strong performance next Sunday against newly promoted Kel Kau at Alpine Field in Wayland.

MPS O30's Khano Smith Named Captain for Bermuda's World Cup Qualifier against Trinidad & Tobago

Bermuda skipper Khano Smith was thrilled with his side’s performance against Trinidad and wants it to be a stepping-stone for the rest of their World Cup campaign.

He believed Bermuda were unfortunate not come away a point against a Trinidad team packed with professional experience.

He was particularly impressed with Bermuda’s defending for managing to frustrate the hosts for long periods.

“The team played very well, obviously Trinidad have more experienced players in the international arena than us, but I couldn’t be more proud to captain a side,” said the 30-year-old.

“The guys showed the right attitude and mind-frame to be competitive.

“We played well, covered well for each other, and overall played for each other. It was a good performance and we can look to get a result in the next match.

“They couldn’t break us down and resorted to the long ball and playing Kenwyne Jones in over the top because our shape was good. They tried that the last time we played them, but this time they managed to nick a goal after we lost concentration just before the half.

“Going into the second half we didn’t know what to expect because we were using different tactics to try and get the second goal, but we stuck to our guns and in the end it’s okay to go into the next match off the back of this, although it’s a loss.”

The side assembled by head coach Devarr Boyles yesterday was one of the youngest Smith has played in, with the former New England Revolution man pleasantly surprised with how well the newcomers acquitted themselves. “We have a talented group so we will only get better as we go on,” he said. “When you look at this side we have 17-year-olds as well as experienced international players.

“We are all familiar with Trinidad, especially me, but this time around we had a bunch of younger new guys in the side as well as a few guys that were here a few years back, so we knew what to expect from them and we made it difficult for them again.”

“I started cramping up with about 20 minutes to go, so for precautionary measures I played in defence so I didn’t have to do that much running in the final moments,” Smith said.

Smith has urged his team-mates to build on yesterday’s encouraging performance and claim all three points when they take on Guyana in their second Group B qualifier on Tuesday.

“Playing the favourites (Trinidad) on the road in the first game is good because it’s the hardest game.

“Unfortunately we couldn’t get the right result, but we can move on from and hopefully get the job done against Guyana.”

Wayland, MA-MPS O30 managed to find their way into the Over 30 Division I Final this morning with a hard fought 1-0 victory over bogey side Ipswich. Jeff Lavigne scored the winner, finishing off a James Proctor pass twenty minutes into the second half.

Ipswich were lively, providing MPS their sternest test of the spring. MPS probably had the better of the possession, and created more scoring opportunities, but Ipswich were always there ready to pounce on any openings.

Josh Cole was outstanding in net and a compilation of players provided solid defense in the back four.

Khano Smith and Jeff Lavigne were lively up front.

In the other semi final, Braintree defeated DEA Bedford 3-1 to advance to next Sunday's final. It will be an 11:00 am kickoff at Lincoln Field in Lexington.

MPS O30 Secures Division I South Title, Prepares for Playoffs

MPS in search of another trophy

Wayland, MA-Concord United forfeited their game against MPS O30 this past weekend. Having avoided relegation and unable to make the playoffs, the prospect of facing a MPS team that have outscored them 17-3 in their last three league encounters must have made the living room couch look mighty comfortable.

In other league action, Braintree Celtic defeated the Bohs 3-0 and secured second place, which will see them travel to DEA Bedford next weekend.

MPS O30 will host Ipswich next Sunday morning at Alpine Field in Wayland, looking to advance to the Finals the following weekend against the Braintree v DEA Bedford winner.

MPS Dismantle Boston White Eagles 4-1

Boston, MA-The 2011 Spring season is winding down. The penultimate weekend of regular season matches found MPS firmly entrenched at the top of the table. Sunday's beat down of an over matched White Eagle club was the type of performance the manager was looking for as the playoffs approach.

MPS took an early through Emeka Iheme's first goal of the spring. James delivered a precise corner kick. Iheme held off a defender while lifting his leg like Hulk Hogan after throwing someone against the turn buckle, the ball deflecting off his foot into the goal. It was an impressive show of strength, and also reaffirmed the fact that good things can happen in soccer when your eyes are closed.

The early lead only boosted an already effervescent MPS side. Shortly afterward, everyone was treated to a world class own goal by Boston Eagles, as one of their defenders full volleyed from the top of his own penalty box into an open net for 2-0. Before the end of the half, the 10:25 am running of the Zecca Express steamrollered through the Eagles six yard box, burying a goal their goalkeeper, and an unlucky defender. The game was over, save the second half.

Ten minutes into the second half Alex scored his second, a world class strike from the top of the box for 4-0. White Eagles scored a consolation goal which provided the final 4-1 scoreline.

Allan Thompson (center)

It is with a heavy heart that we relay the passing of Allan Thompson. Allan died Friday after a battle with lung cancer. Allan was one of the original founders of the Over-the-Hill Soccer League. He had been on the Board of Directors for the past 30 years and, most remarkably, he served as President for nearly 20 years. Allan oversaw the remarkable growth of this league and was passionate about‘s its well-being. His years of service to the game as a player, coach, manager and league official was recognized in 1999 when Mr. Thompson was elected to the MASS Soccer Hall of Fame.

We have lost a dear friend of our game.

There will be a service at Eugene McCarthy & Sons funeral home at 11 Lincoln St. Framingham on Wednesday at 10am. An obituary will be in the Metrowest Daily News, and the Boston Globe on Monday.

5.8.2011 Concord, MA-MPS steamrollered Concord United Sunday morning at Concord-Carlisle HS. The final score read 5-1 but only thanks to several excellent saves from the United keeper.

MPS started sharp. Set out in a 4-5-1, MPS dominated possession. John Conte opened the scoring with a fine finish from a well weighted through ball. Fifteen minutes later, Yosh opened his MPS scoring account. Receiving the ball at the top of the box, he jinxed to his favored left side, evaded another Concord defender and slotted home for 2-0. It was an excellent goal.

Minutes later, for the second time in four games, an MPS center back was left for dead care of a well executed step over. The ensuing shot was well blocked by Martin in goal. However, the rebound was finished. It was 2-1 at halftime.

The second half was eventful. MOM Award winner Jeff L went on a rampage. Jeff scored two, which clearly wasn’t enough, as he relentlessly attacked Concord’s goal. The third goal was an exquisite free kick from Avery. Well known for slicing people in two with his robust approach, Avery has recently found a more refined side to his game. Avery’s deft left footed shot found the back of the net in style. The final 5-1 score line was an accurate reflection of the day’s events.

In related team news, MPS O30’s team doctors have reported back to upper management the results of recent medical tests. Danny’s disturbing lack of field awareness and disorientation in following the path of a cross-field pass led doctors to run a series blood tests. Thankfully, the lab had many blood samples from Danny, ranging from his headbutting Ron while trying to head a ball a few seasons ago, to excessive chaffing from his knee brace. These tests all came back negative.

In addition, upper management has revisited the vetting process involved in the signing of Mike Reilly. Careful examination of associate interviews and analysis of his Facebook page has led team officials to an unsurprising realization: he really is a pain in the ass.

Wayland, MA-Two second half goals propelled MPS O30 to a 2-0 victory against recently promoted Boston White Eagles. The Division 2 Champions are an improved side from their last appearance in Division I. The first half was tight.

MPS converted to a 4-4-2 in the second half. The change in system gave MPS a more compact feel and made them more dangerous on the break. Khano converted a PK after being brought down in the box and Jeff L scored ten minutes later from a tremendous Avery cross. It was an excellent goal and closed the door on the Eagles' hopes of leaving Wayland with any points.

Concord, MA-A change of venue to the turf fields at Middlesex School in Concord, allowed MPS O30 and the Bohemians to play Sunday morning. A night of rain had no impact on the field or picturesque setting for this Division I South encounter.

The Bohemians always give MPS a tough game and Sunday was no different. They bossed play through the first half and went into halftime with a 1-0 lead from a well finished free kick.

MPS had started the game with six 40+ players in the starting lineup. In the second half a younger more direct team proved to make a difference. MPS had the better of the second half, forced an equalizer, and could have left with all three points if not for a stunning miss from four yards out with only the keeper to beat.

In the end, a 1-1 draw was the fair result, with both teams having enjoyed a competitive Sunday morning match.

MPS Secure 2-0 Victory in Season Opener

Quincy, MA--Spring finally arrived Sunday morning for MPS O30. A long off season of indoor sessions helped prepare a revamped MPS O30 side for their season opener against Paddy Barrys at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Quincy.

The 2-0 final was a fair accounting of a good match between these two sides. MPS O30 just edged it across the board, looking a little fitter, sharper, and cohesive. Paddy Barrys, however, will be a hard team to handle once they integrate some of their newer players and find their game legs.

MPS opened up the scoring in the 25th minutes as new signing Jeff Lavigne opened his MPS scoring account. MPS broke out and caught Paddy Barrys on their heels. Jeff is especially effective in the open field, which he displayed with a powerful drive from just inside the penalty box for 1-0. MPS settled in after securing the lead and enjoyed their best spell of the game in the final fifteen minutes of the half.

Indoor MVP James Proctor picked up where he left off this winter as he put MPS ahead 2-0 with a classy finish in the 72nd minute. It was an excellent goal for James, who's well rounded display did not go unnoticed by the manager.

This week's MOM Award goes to Josh Cole. MPS O30's newest addition to their goalkeeping ranks was superb. Strong distribution, timely saves, and a confident presence throughout, Josh was the key to securing a shutout in his MPS debut. His performance certainly bodes well for both the club and Josh. Congratulations Josh on a well deserved MOM Award.

Indoor Sessions End...Regualr Season Two Weeks Away

Eagle Brook Saloon treated us well again this winter.

Norfolk, MA-MPS O30 concluded their off season indoor sessions this afternoon at ForeKicks in Norfolk. With 25 completed sessions behind them the players and staff feel confident about their preparations for the upcoming 2011 spring outdoor season.

Besides allowing the players to complete at a high level and more importantly, getting them out of the house for a few hours each week, MPS O30's technical staff was able to compile a wide range of data related to each player's performance. This data combined with post match video analysis has provided the coaching staff with state of the art individual player performance rankings that will be used this spring to decide playing time and player placement in a variety of playing systems. MPS O30 remain on the cutting edge of enhanced player analysis.

James played well and enjoyed many strong post match performances. Several other players pushed for this Award. James however, nosed it at the end, deservedly so.

The goalkeeping this winter was truly world class. Andrew, Josh, Dan, Dima, Martin, Jeff, and Nick all proved to be more than capable shot blockers. Andrew however, stood out against strong competition.

What is there to say about Bjorn? He bounced back from a catastrophic injury last winter and found his way back out to play again this winter. Not just play, but play well.

Congratulations everyone. As always, it was a lot of fun both during and after, now it's time to get to work outdoors.

Jake Dowden Scores First MPS O30 Goal!

Wayland, MA--Jake Dowden scored his first goal for MPS O30 in their 1-1 draw Sunday morning against British Beer Company Rovers. It took seven games and numerous opportunities for Jake to finally open his scoring account. A perfectly weighted free kick was nodded back by Dan Rudolph for Jake to convert from a solid 8 inches out. Don't let the proximity fool you--his supportive teammates breathed a collective sigh of relief when the ball hit the back of the net. Upper management is anxiously awaiting a tsunami of goals from the player whose career they have been trying to resuscitate all fall.

Saturday afternoon MPS played a well attended exhibition match against a Brazilian side containing four members of their 1994 World Cup winning side. The match took place at Bowditch Field in Framingham.

Saturday's 5-2 victory marked former Revolution player Edgaras Jankauskas debut for MPS O30. A tall powerful striker, Edgaras has played professionally in nine different countries, and represented the Lithuanian national team for almost 20 years. While at F.C. Porto, Jankauskas made history as the first Lithuanian footballer to win the UEFA Champions League, on 26 May 2004. Edgaras scored three goals Saturday while setting up goals for James Proctor and Alex Zecca to propel MPS O30 to a comprehensive victory. See picture of squad below.

MPS started well Sunday morning at Alpine Field in Wayland. Set out in a 4-4-2, MPS dominated possession and scoring opportunities throughout the opening 45 minutes. Jake Dowden's goal gave them a 1-0 lead at halftime.

The second half found MPS dominant again, though to a lesser extent than the first half. Their inability to kill off the match with another goal came back to haunt them as Rovers converted a fine goal with one of their only opportunities of the half. Late in the match it took a world class save from MPS goalkeeper Chris Hamblin to preserve a point as Rovers almost stole one at the end.

It was an excellent performance overall with the lack of a final killer touch the deciding factor.

MPS Continue to Roll in 4-0 Victory Over Concord

Concord, MA--MPS O40 rolled over Concord United this morning 4-0. It was a comprehensive victory punctuated by four fine goals. The match opened with Concord adopting Champions League away match tactics--all eleven of their players bunkered in behind the ball.

MPS had anticipated this approach-setting themselves out in a 4-5-1 to try and encourage Concord's outside backs to wander into attack. Thankfully, Mike Reilly scored in the 18th minute, forcing Concord to press the game a bit.

This change in tactics worked in MPS's favor, as the additional open space provided MPS with more freedom to assert their dominance. Superb goals from Andy and Wes were not long in coming. The scoreline read 3-0 at halftime.

MPS dominated the second half even more than the first. However, a combination of fine goalkeeping from the Concord GK and careless finishing meant MPS scored only once. The one goal was a cracker jack, as a marauding off the ball run from right back Joe Bradley was finished in style care of a perfectly weighted Dan Rudolph cross. It was clearly a case of quality not quantity in the goals department in the second half.

This week's MOM Award goes to the entire team--except Brett, who was red carded. Everyone else enjoyed quality performances.

MPS O30 Concede first goal still win 3-1

Duxbury, MA-MPS O30 had a full starting XI by 8:05 am this morning for their 8:30 am match at Lincoln Field in Duxbury. This unprecedented level of dedication was a good omen for MPS as they continued their winning ways with a 3-1 victory over Braintree Celtic.

A solid fifteen donned MPS's alternate yellow strip and carefully listened for their tactical assignments. Set out in a 4-5-1, MPS aimed to flood out Braintree's midfield while looking for quick breakout opportunities. It didn't take long to realize the tactics were spot on, as Danny Caldicott continued his fine run of form, scoring the opener after ten minutes. It was a delightful goal, combining all of Danny's best attributes: speed, aggression, persistence and in this case, a little bit of class.

Unfortunately, a mishap in the back gave Braintree the lifeline they needed ten minutes later. Football is a cruel game--one misstep and Braintree's striker was in. The rebound from Martin's truly spectacular save finished for 1-1. MPS regained their footing shortly after and finished out the half on even terms.

In the second half MPS regained the upper hand in terms of possession. It took almost thirty minutes for them to turn that advantage into anything tangible--specifically another goal. As is well documented in the statistical archives of MPS O30 World Headquarters, MPS almost always scores in the later stages of their away games at Lincoln Field. This morning was no different.

With fifteen minutes remaining a Braintree Celtic defender was whistled for a foul about twenty five yards out from goal. The ensuing free kick was delivered with power and caught a slight deflection, before being batted away by Braintree's goalkeeper. Newcomer Mike Reilly latched on to the rebound--heading in bravely from close range for his first MPS O30 goal. Moments later, a fine bit of play instigated by Dave Baumritter, eventually sprung Mike for his second goal and the eventual final score of 3-1.

This week's MOM Awards go to Nils Hegstad and Mike Reilly. A frustrating spring season can finally be put to bed by Nils, as he enjoyed his best performance in almost a year in the heart of the MPS defense. Always looking to brush aside the dreaded enigma label, Nils should use this performance as a springboard for the rest of the fall. Mike on the other hand clearly benefited from the calming influence of carpooling with Phil and Danny. While an hour and fifteen minutes of listening to NPR and acoustic sunrise would sedate most, Mike parlayed the experience into a determined effort--culminating with two fine goals.

Consistent MPS O30 win 1-0...again!

Wayland, MA-MPS O30 improved to 3-0 this morning against a stubborn British Beer Company Rovers side. The final score was 1-0 for the third week running, as another solid team performance earned MPS all three points. MPS O30's play has not been prolific by any stretch, however, they have managed to play to their strengths while creating just enough opportunities to earn results.

This morning found MPS O30's career wins leader, Andrew Tucker, in goal. Always a fan favorite and at his best in the biggest games, Andrew was at sea in the opening fifteen minutes. Healthy living and a new 34 waistline apparently takes its toll on goalkeepers. Thankfully for everyone, Andrew found his bearings and produced several outstanding saves throughout the remaining seventy five minutes to secure yet another MPS O30 shutout.

British Beer Company Rovers has the look of a team that will be harder to handle the second time around. Solid in goal while integrating several new players gives Rovers reason to be optimistic as the season moves forward. As always, they were a handful physically and managed to more than trouble a solid MPS back four.

An even first half, minus the first fifteen minutes when Rovers created several scoring opportunities, led to a 0-0 scoreline at halftime. The second half was controlled more by MPS. Solid in the back with steady performances in midfield, MPS lacked the killer touch up front. Eventually, however, MPS found a way to unlock Rovers' defense. An excellent pass from Roger to left midfielder Andy gave last week's MOM Award winner a chance to deliver a tantalizing cross. It was cleverly knocked back by Jake and then powerfully headed into the Rovers goal by Danny for 1-0 MPS. It was an outstanding goal all around.

This week's MOM Award goes to Danny Caldicott. His game winning goal was only the icing on the cake for an outstanding all around performance. Danny slotted into the center of midfield for the second half and produced a superb all around display. If he could only play like that all the time!

MPS Dominate While Squeaking Out 1-0 Victory

Dorchester, MA--The friendly confines of trash strewn Ceylon Park provided the venue for MPS O30's match with the Bohemians Sunday morning. Looking sharp in their showcase black strip, MPS needed the opening fifteen minutes to find their stride.

After settling down and withstanding the Bohemians initial surge, MPS dominated possession. A combination of superb goalkeeping from the Bohs and comical finishing by MPS led to a 0-0 scoreline at halftime.

Eventually MPS's nonstop pressure proved to be too much for the Bohs. MOM Award winner Andrew Apstein potted a classic goal to garner all three points. A perfectly weighted diagonal ball from John Conte was greeted by a world class first touch from Andy. Taking a moment to gather himself, Andy proceeded to dispatch an unsaveable shot into the side netting.

It was a strong overall team performance, with Andy's goal punctuating a MOM Award winning individual effort.

MPS O30 Open Fall Season with 1-0 Win

Wayland, MA--MPS O30 collected all three points this morning against Paddy Barry's at Alpine Field. The 1-0 result giving MPS a small degree of redemption for the 4-0 thrashing they endured at the hands of Paddy Barry's in the spring.

Four new players made their MPS O30s debut today with mixed results. Former Rovers players Mike Riley and John Conte were clearly more accustomed to the demands of Division I play. Newcomers Jake Dowden and Peter Czerepak struggled to find their legs--Peter straining some muscle none of us had ever heard of before while Jake continued to work his way slowly into playing shape.

Several players that played for Black Rhinos in the summer managed to shake off the bad habits they had developed during an unsuccessful summer campaign. The rest of the squad's performances were pretty status quo from the spring. MPS O30's dedicated O40 contingent again provided the backbone for the team this morning.

After an even first half, MPS O30 acclimated themselves to the less than ideal playing surface provided by Alpine field. The second half found MPS dominating possession while eventually forcing in the game winning goal. Wes provided the telling pass into the danger zone that Alex managed to turn and fire into the net.

This week's MOM Award goes to Alex Zecca. There was not much between each player's performance this morning. The opening fixture giving everyone a chance to find their legs. Alex however, did manage to turn a relatively average performance into a MOM Award winning performance with a quick moment of quality that settled the game and earned MPS O30 all three points.

Boston, MA-MPS O30 announced their First XI following another Veterans Cup Championship and appearance in the OTHSL Finals this spring. Avery John garnered the Newcomer of the Year Award despite his penalty kick inducing foul in the O30s Final. The Golden Boot and Best American Award went to Jay Heaps. His passionate defending of his fellow Americans in the wake of barbs from an Irish teammate securing his award.

Newly appointed Chairperson of the MPS O30 Social Committee, Emeka Iheme, received rave reviews for his first official team function.
Hopefully he didn't tweak his back drinking Bud Lights and walking around in flip flops. Truth be told his performance last night overshadowed his entire spring season! MPS O30 now begin a two week preseason training camp at an undisclosed location to prepare for the upcoming fall season. They begin their march towards regaining the OTHSL Division I crown on Sunday, August 29.

Westborough, MA-Emeka Iheme has been appointed Chairperson of the all important MPS O30 Social Committee. With a squad full of players ready to go out at the drop of a hat, it will be a big ask trying to keep this group of players satisfied.

Well versed in a good night out himself, Iheme is looking forward to the challenge his new appointment will present.

"I am confident in my ability to keep this group of players happy. The prospect of putting my mark on such a high profile position is a challenge all my nights out in Boston has prepared me for."

MPS O30 GM Bradley Leads MPS U17 to US Club Soccer National Championship

Waltham, 2^nd August 2010; The MPS U17 Bulldogs were crowned 2010 US Club Soccer National Champions this afternoon after a 4-0 victory over Synergy FC (VT) at the event held in Virginia Beach, VA.

Kyle Friel (Derry, Northern Ireland) captured the spotlight after netting three goals in the championship game which led the side coached by Joe Bradley and Tim Mason to the 10^th youth level national crown captured by MPS since the club was formed in 2001.

“We are delighted and extremely proud of the U17 Bulldogs for winning the US Club Soccer National Tournament which is a tremendous achievement for the club,” said MPS Director of Coaching Peter Bradley. “The team has had a fantastic season to date and it is great to see this group of players achieve success on the national stage.”

The MPS U17 Bulldogs defeated Chicago Fire Juniors Development Academy (3-2) and Californian side Juventus Monarchas (1-0) en-route to the championship game.

After leading 2-0 at half-time, the Bulldogs doubled their tally in the second half to round off a fantastic final.

The US Club Soccer National Championship caps off a fine season for the U17 Bulldogs who have also qualified for the USL Super-Y League National Finals in Florida during November after qualifying via the New England Division during the regular season.

MPS Fall Short in Bid for Third Consecutive Title

Lexington, MA—MPS O30 lost 2-1 in a hard fought affair with Ipswich in this morning’s Division I Final. After a dominating 2009, MPS lost their first final of 2010. It wasn’t from a lack of effort.

MPS opened the scoring through Ron Murphy. A nice MPS move eventually sprung Markens on the right side of midfield. After beating his man Markens delivered a tantalizing ball for Ron to finish in style. The 1-0 score line was well deserved, as MPS had clearly dominated possession.

Unfortunately, later in the half a poor pass out of the back gifted Ipswich possession at the top of the attacking third. Ipswich capitalized, forcing the ball into the penalty box and eventually scoring an equalizing goal. At halftime the score stood 1-1.

The second half was more of the same. MPS dominated possession without creating any real clear cut scoring opportunities. Clearly, a young set of legs in the form of Geoff Walker, Jay Heaps, or Dan Rudolph would have been helpful. MPS’s older guard, however, did their best to find a winner.

A foul at the top of the penalty box proved to be MPS’s undoing, as the resulting penalty was well taken for a 2-1 Ipswich advantage. MPS pressed for an equalizer, but truth be told, lacked a cutting edge to break down an Ipswich side more than willing to defend in numbers and fight for every ball.

Overall, credit must be given to both teams for putting in solid performances under trying heat conditions.

Please Fasten Your Seat Belts...MPS O30 Preparing to Land

Epping, NH--The past week has been a whirlwind for MPS O30--(3-3 draw with Bohemians last Sunday and 6-2 victory with no cards on Wednesday night against British Beer Company). A season teetering on the brink from the get go, finds MPS in next weekend's Division I Finals against Ipswich.

MPS O30 produced their finest performance of the season in this morning's Division I Semi Final. Facing the Division I North Champions, Seacoast United, MPS answered the call in style. The 1.5 hour drive to Epping, New Hampshire gave MPS's players time to carefully review a well thought out game plan--serve the ball into the box and let Jay head it into the goal.

MPS started sharp. Within the opening ten minutes they had put down a marker letting Seacoast know they were ready to play. Some good interplay on the left flank produced a pin point cross graciously met by a high flying Jay Heaps. It was a stunning header combining power, precision, and timing. The early goal only helped build confidence in a MPS ready to work. Not long after, Geoff Walker and Jay combined well at the top of the box, Geoff's clever touch springing Jay, who ruthlessly finished for 2-0. The scoreline stood 2-0 at halftime.

All credit to a game Seacoast side in the second half. Most teams would have wilted under the oppressive heat, scoreline, and MPS's overall possession. Seacoast battled through a solid second half as MPS continued to create opportunities--their goalkeeper making several outstanding saves to keep the score at 2-0. Unfortunately for him, there was nothing he could do about MPS's third goal. Geoff Walker delivered a perfect corner for Jay to meet with a thunderous header. Possessing a vertical leap superior to the rest of MPS's players combined jumping ability, Jay has proven to be a handful inside the penalty box.

The 3-0 scoreline was an accurate reflection of MPS's overall play throughout. An astute post match sideline reflection summed up today's performance, "Everyone played well today." Couldn't agree more. Hopefully MPS can produce another solid match in next Sunday's Final.

MPS Claw Way Back to Top of the Table

Wayland, MA--A resilient MPS O30 side ground out a 1-0 victory this morning against Braintree Celtic. Wes Atamian's early goal helped take the pressure off MPS in this table topping encounter. Settled into a deep lying 4-4-2, MPS sacrificed possession in an effort to stay consolidated throughout most of the match.

The first half was relatively even with Braintree having to press more in search of an equalizer. MPS used this to their advantage, creating several opportunities on the break.

In the second half Braintree had a significant advantage in possession and created several good chances for themselves. However, co-Man of the Match winner GK Martin Reggette responded to the moment while securing a shutout. Wes Atamian is the other MOM winner this week. His early goal proved to be the game winner and helped provide MPS with a valuable three points.

Team Effort Secures Three Points Against White Eagles

Wayland, MA--MPS O30 worked hard to right the ship this morning, a week removed from a humbling defeat against Paddy Barry's in Quincy. The opening thirty minutes found MPS leading 3-0 care of two goals from Jay H and a goal from Danny C. James P was instrumental on two of the goals. His defense splitting pass to Danny and precise cross for Jay were both superb. White Eagles scored in the closing minutes of the half to make it 3-1.

MPS began to tire in the second half and subsequently found themselves stretched out on occassion. White Eagles scored for 3-2 before Alex scored a cheeky goal to restore MPS's two goal advantage at 4-2. The last kick of the game saw White Eagles score a screamer into the side netting for a 4-3 final.

It was an improved performance from last week, with the back four of Roger, Phil, Ken, and Nils in good form. Dave B was excellent in a holding center midfield role which allowed Jay, James, and Danny freedom to attack. Up front Alex, Wes, and Geoff put in solid shifts leading the line.

MPS O30 have Memorial Day Weekend off before hosting Braintree Celtic on Sunday, June 6.

End of an Era? MPS O30 Stare into the Abyss

Quincy, MA--MPS O30 were soundly beaten 4-0 by Paddy Barrys this morning at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Quincy. Unlike the Titanic, which smashed into an iceberg on one fateful night, MPS O30 has been watching the iceberg closing in for the past few weeks, making it more painful to watch. The dominant Over 30 team of the new millennium may finally be reaching the end of a cycle--as all great teams do.

MPS managed to find twelve players for this morning's match, with one unable to play but a few minutes due to injury. Of the remaining eleven, five players were 40+ in age, giving Paddy Barrys a distinct advantage in the age/athleticism department. Regardless, each week this spring MPS has been faced with the same problem, low numbers and the complete inability of the younger members of the playing squad to rise to the occasion.

For the second week in a row, MPS was forced to battle back from 1-0 care of a goalkeeping error. Paddy Barrys confidence grew in the wake of their advantage, while MPS's confidence began to dwindle. The 1-0 scoreline at halftime, however, was certainly not insurmountable.

MPS converted to a 3-5-2 in the second half and the results were almost instantaneous. Within the first ten minutes MPS were awarded a penalty kick. Unfortunately, the ensuing PK was launched into the upper decks Roberto Baggio style. Moments later MPS were in again with a clear cut chance to equalize just outside the six yard box. Again, the attempted finish was nowhere near the goal. Those two moments could have changed MPS's fate. Needless to say, they did not, and MPS endured one of its heaviest defeats in team history.

Time will tell if MPS O30 have the resources to recover from such a body blow. In the meantime, they will look to regroup against Boston White Eagles next Sunday morning at Alpine Field in Wayland.

MPS O30 Salvage 1-1 Draw against Bohemians

Concord, MA--MPS O30 scored in the closing minutes this morning at Middlesex School in Concord to salvage a 1-1 draw against a determined Bohemians side. Patrick's late equalizer gave MPS a home point.

The beautiful playing surface and tranquil setting were tarnished by hurricane force winds as both teams struggled getting out from the gate side end.

MPS fell victim to the dreaded banana kick corner early in the first half. Goalkeeper Martin had the best view, as he watched it go in from the goal line. That was all the encouragement a Bohs side, already intent on grabbing all three points, needed.

MPS struggled all over the park, with MOM Award winner John Shue (pictured left) the only bright spot. Credit were credit is due, MPS O30, though poor throughout, somehow managed to equalize and possibly win, if another quality chance in the closing minutes wasn't wasted.

The draw keeps MPS O30 top of the table while alarm bells are ringing amongst MPS O30 upper management.

This week's MOM Award goes to John Shue. His Drew Bledsoe like ability to telegraph his passes aside, John's defensive prowess remains second to none. Honest as the day is long, he would certainly be in MPS O30's first XI for any big game.

MPS 30 Draw 1-1 with Braintree Celtic

Duxbury, MA--MPS O30 battled the heat and a strong Braintree Celtic side to a 1-1 draw this morning at Lincoln Field in Duxbury. Historically, this fixture has always led to an inordinate amount of late dropouts. This morning a committed group of thirteen made the trip.

The first half found MPS struggling with Braintree's 3-5-2 alignment. The rough surface and extra man in midfield made it difficult for MPS to settle. It took awhile, but eventually MPS found their legs and started to change the balance of play. Unfortunately, just as MPS started to turn the screw, Mark Manganello turned in the box, and as MPS defenders should know, it only takes a sliver of time and space for him to convert, which he did, for 1-0.

Moments before halftime, Dan Rudolph, in a stunning display of soccer darwinism, steamrollered through the Braintree defense, his brave finish equalizing things at 1-1. The Discovery Channel certainly could have used that footage if they were ever to do a documentary on Over 30 soccer, as the poor Braintree defender resembled an injured gazelle being hunted by a lion.

The second half was a lot of huffing and puffing from both teams, with nothing to show for their endeavor after 45 minutes.

MPS will certainly take an away point that keeps them at the top of the table.

This week's MOM award goes to Dave Baumritter. Dave was outstanding in the heart of the MPS defense with Ken Risley. Mobile and strong in the tackle, Dave settled a back four that was a bit shaky in the opening 30 minutes.

Unusual Lineup Leads MPS to 5-0 Victory

Wayland, MA--MPS O30 carry the full allotment of 30 players on their roster. Even with 30 players to choose from they were barely able to field a starting XI this morning in Wayland. Ninety minutes later, MPS walked away with a comprehensive 5-0 victory against British Beer Company Rovers, a side that historically has given MPS all they can handle.

The Rovers back four had to like their chances when they saw the erratic Danny Caldicott and usual center back Dave Baumritter starting up front. Little did they know what trouble lay ahead. Early on, James Proctor's first header in 3 years played in Dave who calmly slotted home for 1-0 MPS. Five minutes before halftime, this week's MOM Award winner, Markens Benoit, scored the second for 2-0. It was an outstanding goal. Markens took down a 50 yard cross field pass, cut in from the right and fired in a left footed pile driver.

MPS caught Rovers on the break several times during the second half, finishing three, for the final 5-0 scoreline.

There were several outstanding performances for MPS this morning. Murphy shook of the effects of the cryogenic freeze he has been placed in since his last knee surgery and picked up where he left off--having guys take a number so he could lined them up and plant them in his uncompromising style. John Shue, despite being fined $100 prior to kickoff for not having black shorts or socks, was his usual stunt double self, careening into unsuspecting players and lumping long balls forward. Several doctors from Boston commented on Ken Risley's outstanding performance--citing the positive feedback they can now give their other patients with only one working hip socket. Avery John made his MPS O30 debut, and minus the jumpsuit he was wearing played well.

Markens' season debut however, stood out as MOM worthy. A splendid goal, unselfish play, and most impressive, an 8:50 am arrival time, put Markens into pole position for a hotly contested MOM Award. It was a far cry from the past two weeks, when MPS has labored to find their form. Congratulations Markens, on a well earned MOM Award!

MPS Secure 2-1 Victory Against Boston White Eagles

Boston, MA—MPS O30 managed to secure three points this morning against recently promoted Boston White Eagles. The 2-1 score line is a bit deceptive, as MPS struggled to find a rhythm throughout the entire 90 minutes. There could be no blaming the surface thanks to Boston White Eagles outstanding home field. The large dimensions and field turf would usually be an advantage for MPS, but they still failed to settle.

An early White Eagles goal lead to the opening 1-0 score line. It was an especially frustrating goal as a careless MPS turnover initiated the scoring sequence. It took a while for MPS to equalize. In the 30th minute Wes fought for a 50/50 ball giving MPS an opportunity to spring Dan. Latching onto the early through ball Dan's composed finished tied the score at 1-1. Ten minutes later Dan’s sublime header from a pin point Joe free kick gave MPS a 2-1 lead going into halftime.

Everyone is better off forgetting the second half even happened. It certainly ranks in the Top Three All Time horrible performances by any MPS O30 side.

Hopefully MPS will manage to find their equilibrium in the next few weeks as they work towards another Division I South Playoff spot.

This week’s MOM Award goes to Dan Rudolph--his two goals secured the three points. In a Sunday short of strong performances, Dan stood out as not playing nearly as bad as everyone else.

MPS Opens Spring Season with 1-0 Victory

Wayland, MA--MPS O30 welcomed the 2010 outdoor season with a hard fought 1-0 victory against an improved Paddy Barrys side. An off season of indoor training could do little to prepare MPS for a less than ideal playing surface at Alpine Field. It took both teams a while to find their outdoor legs. Any objective observer would not have been able to pick the better side in the early going.

MPS eventually settled into a somewhat comfortable pattern of play, while never really troubling Paddy Barry's goal, minus a well struck Patrick McCabe shot off the post. The 0-0 scoreline at halftime was more than fair.

The second half saw Nils Hegstad score a fine goal off a MPS free kick, as his well timed run was bravely finished. It was not a dominating performance, but 3 points are always welcome, especially in a season opener.

Today's MOM Award goes to Nils Hegstad. The ten seconds required for Nils to score more than made up for an otherwise uninspiring performance by the enigmatic back. It is always important to reward one of MPS O30's best qualities--playing through a tough outing.

Nicol wants drastic Liverpool change

Steve Nicol: Played for Liverpool during their 1980s glory days

The Reds' only hope of a trophy this season is the Europa League and they have a fight on their hands to finish fourth in the Barclays Premier League in order to qualify for next season's Champions League.

Nicol, who coaches US Major League Soccer side New England Revolution, stopped short of calling for Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez to be sacked but is convinced a lot has to change for the Merseysiders to challenge Manchester United, who they face at Old Trafford today, for top honours.

"Something drastic has to change because the team is going nowhere and ultimately someone is responsible for that," he told the Independent on Sunday. "They need players and they need investment.

"They've spent over £200 million so you can't say they've not had money to buy players. If you don't get the right players, you're not going to win games, and you have to say they haven't got the right players as a unit.''

That lack of overall quality is placing too much pressure on star duo Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres according to Nicol, who was part of the last Liverpool side to win the domestic league title in 1990.

"(Gerrard and Torres) look as though they're carrying the whole stadium on their back<" Nicol said. "Every time they touch the ball they are under pressure to do something.

"You have big European nights where Gerrard and Torres are winning the games but it is not possible to carry that burden every single time you step on the field.''

MPS O30 Lose MVP to Injury

Westborough, MA--MPS O30's Bjorn Hansen is resting comfortably today after surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon. There has been quite a bit of speculation regarding the extent of Bjorn's injury after he collapsed in a heap during a preseason training session.

In an effort to help dispel inaccurate reports regarding how Bjorn was injured, MPS O30 has released the following statement:

"MPS O30 would like to wish Bjorn a speedy recovery from his recent injury. Contrary to published reports Bjorn was not injured trying to strike a ball with his left foot. We categorically deny having ever seen Bjorn attempt such a maneuver. MPS O30 remain confident Bjorn will be back in the squad for preseason training for early January 2011, as he had just bought a pair of new cleats for the first time in 8 years. A diligent rehabilitation program combined with Bjorn's distaste for wasting money should speed up the recovery process."

MPS 2 Braintree Celtic 1--2009 Finished in Style

Lexington, MA--2009 has been a year to remember for MPS Over 30. This afternoon's 2-1 victory against a strong Braintree Celtic side provided the final piece to an already successful year.

It all started last November on a Wednesday night at ForeKicks in Marlborough. The feisty level of weekly offseason competition helped prepare MPS Over 30 for their most ambitious year yet.

The Spring season's OTHSL Semi Final saw MPS defeat Seacoast 2-0 in New Hampshire thanks to goals from Alex Zecca and Wes Atamian. In the final MPS beat the same Braintree Celtic side in PKs, care of a last minute equalizer and deciding PK by Patrick McCabe. A few short weeks later MPS put the finishing touches on their first Veterans Cup Championship after five games in five days at Progin Park in Lancaster. In the Final, Mark Manganello scored two goals in MPS's 2-0 victory against a side from Pennsylvania who had no idea what they were getting themselves into prior to kickoff. Several of MPS Over 30s veteran players then lead MPS Over 40 to a Veterans Cup Championship.

This fall MPS continued to ride the wave of momentum. A 9-1-0 regular season found MPS at the top of Division I South. Along the way, several younger members of the side started to establish themselves as the team's future. Geoff Walker finished the season as top scorer with eight goals. Andy Apstein built on his Most Improved Player Award from the Spring to become one of MPS's most dangerous attacking players. Nils Hegstad took steps towards securing a place in the back four and Tony D'Angelo, Tom Smith, and Dan Rudolph played their part in helping MPS secure vital victories.

Last weekend in Lancaster, MPS dismantled Seacoast 5-1 in the Division I Semi Final. It was a comprehensive victory that included two outstanding header goals from Wes Atamian.

Today's final was highlighted by an excellent individual performance from Championship MOM Award Winner Bjorn Hansen. His two beautiful little daughters in tow, Bjorn proceeded to end Braintree's hopes of a win in the opening fifteen minutes thanks to two stunning goals. There was nothing rudimentary about either finish, as Bjorn was cleverly sprung into space behind the defense for his first and moments later Andy Apstein's cross was finished in style for his second. A lesser team would have completely collapsed after these two body blows.

The second half found MPS holding on a bit as Braintree pushed forward. A late goal made it 2-1, but overall it was comfortable in the back with Andrew Tucker between the posts and a solid group of defenders holding their ground.

Successful Weekend for MPS Over 30

Wayland/Lancaster, MA—MPS Over 30 closed out their regular season this past Friday night under the lights against Rovers at Wayland HS. The 3-0 score line was an accurate reflection of MPS’s performance against a Rovers side that had won five games on the trot.

Rovers had a hard time sorting out MPS’s 4-5-1 alignment. Geoff Walker was outstanding throughout, stretching Rovers’ backs and chasing down lost causes in the role of lone front man.

Bjorn Hansen scored a superb opener after fifteen minutes, which fed into MPS’s tactics of catching Rovers on the break. The 1-0 scoreline at the break was comfortable for MPS. The second half was more of the same, as MPS methodically wore down their opponents. A bit of quick interplay was finished by Geoff Walker for 2-0. Andy Apstein scored an excellent goal to close out the scoring at 3-0. MPS remained disciplined and closed up their regular season record at 9-1-0 courtesy of Friday night’s victory.

Sunday morning found MPS facing Seacoast of Division I North in the OTHSL Semi-Finals. MPS again looked the part, as they took full advantage of the beautiful playing surface at Progin Park. Playing in a traditional 4-4-2, MPS again scored early, as Bjorn Hansen was unceremoniously taken down inside the Seacoast penalty box. Geoff Walker converted the ensuing penalty kick for 1-0 MPS. Fifteen minutes later Geoff was on hand again to convert an Emeka Iheme shot parried away by Seacoast’s goalkeeper. Before halftime, Wes Atamian headed home a world-class goal from a Bjorn cross before Seacoast slotted home for 3-1 at halftime.

The second half was all MPS. Andy Apstein scored his second goal in three days followed by another Wes header, care of a perfectly delivered Andy cross. MPS was lively throughout and seem to be in good form heading into Sunday’s OTHSL Final against Braintree Celtic.

MPS Split Weekend Games with Bohemians

Wayland/Quincy, MA--MPS Over 30 suffered their first loss of the season this past Sunday in Quincy. Friday night's 2-1 victory was a distant memory as MPS never got out of the blocks against a game Bohemians side that fully deserved all three points via their 4-2 victory.

Friday night found MPS squeaking out a 2-1 victory care of goals from Geoff Walker and Dan Rudolph. The Bohs had to leave Wayland High School feeling good about their chances in Quincy come Sunday morning.

Those expectations were greeted by a disjointed MPS display. With Players arriving at game time, there was no sense of urgency, as the Bohemians treated MPS to a little playground justice. MPS did manage to fight their way back to 2-2 before halftime, but the second half was all Bohemians.

MPS is looking to regroup this week as they prepare for Sunday's match with Paddy Barry's.

Wayland, MA--MPS earned a gritty 1-0 victory this morning against Braintree Celtic. Alex Zecca's superb first time finish from an equally impressive Geoff Walker cross earned MPS all three points. With three 40+ and a smattering of 39 year olds in the starting XI MPS Over 30 is aging gracefully. It was not a dominating performance, but as is often the case, it was enough to get a result.

Geoff Walker garnered this week's MOM Award with a well rounded performance and scintillating early cross that provided the difference between the two sides. Congratulations Geoff!

Concord, MA--It was deja vu all over again at Concord-Carlisle this morning as MPS finished off Concord United in Roger Federeresque style 6-2. Combined with Thursday night's 6-2 victory you would guess Concord United has seen enough of MPS Over 30 for the Fall Season.

The game was only a few minutes old when MPS jumped on a weak clearance for an early 1-0 lead. Shortly after, MOM Award winner Alex Zecca had his first of three goals for a 2-0 lead. Geoff Walker scored his first goal of the game before Concord scored for 3-1 at halftime.

The second half was more of the same as Alex and Geoff combined to score an additional three goals. Alex's third goal was superbly taken as he finished of a precise early ball from Geoff. It was a good workout all around as MPS saw plenty of the ball and stayed relatively sharp throughout.

Congratulations to MOM Award winner Alex Zecca. His hat trick combined with Thursday's goal puts him at the top of the scoring chart with 4 goals. Alex was lively throughout and took all three of his goals well.

Concord, MA-Please do not be fooled by the scoreline dear MPS Over 30 Blog readers, as last night's victory was not nearly as satisfying as the score may indicate. Most if not all teams would be satisfied with scoring six goals in a league match...MPS Over 30 is not most teams.

The inviting confines of Concord-Carlisle greeted MPS for their first night game of the season. MPS opened up in a basic 4-4-2 with four of its youngest squad members making their season debuts. Youth truly is wasted on the young, as MPS found itself playing a direct dribble focused style. Unfortunately for the entire squad, the younger players don't have the opportunity to see how simple MPS has made the game for each other. MPS dominates teams not because they are faster, stronger, or more skilled, they dominate teams because they have players "who get it" and make the game easy for each other. Regardless, we needed the numbers so you have to take what you can get.

MPS did manage to put together a lethal fifteen minute spell in the first half. Tom Smith opened up the scoring, followed by two excellent goals from MOM Award winner Brett MacQuarrie. Alex Zecca closed out the first half scoreline with an opportunistic finish for 4-0.

The second half found MPS having a difficult time keeping their foot on the gas. The 4-0 scoreline provided too much comfort and lead to an eventual Concord United goal. For those of you that are fans of the original Rocky movie, you will recall when Burgess Meredith brought young Sylvester Stallone out for a morning workout. Rocky's goal, a simple one, catch the chicken. MPS goalkeeper Lee Billiard did his best impersonation of that scene as he tried to handle a Concord United free kick into the box. You would have thought Concord had dipped the ball in baby oil before taking the kick, as Billiard inexplicably coughed it up with the resulting rebound providing a 4-1 scoreline.

Geoff Walker and Kevin Aylett scored two second half goals, but the amount of time and energy it took both of them to finally score is the complete opposite of "going green" in a soccer sense. The best part about the second half was that it ended so we could have an enjoyable post match debriefing in the parking lot.

Congratulations to MOM Award Winner Brett MacQuarrie. Brett responded superbly to last Sunday's performance, a performance that would have lead less of a man to seriously consider sticking with bocce as his only form of competition. Brett, however, like the rest of us, had the support and encouragement of his MPS teammates to see him through. Sometimes it truly is darkest before the dawn, as Brett's MOM Award reflects. Congratulations Brett!

Quincy, MA--A gray foggy morning in Quincy was brightened up by MPS Over 30s new alternate jerseys. The safety green strip was well received by the hard to please members of the MPS playing squad. The new kits seemed to bring a freshness to MPS's early play against a well organized Paddy Barry side.

Nick Richio opened up the scoring early for MPS care of a superb Patrick McCabe pass. There was still plenty to do, as Nick worked his way into the box and finished low to the far corner. It was an outstanding goal all around and gave MPS the breathing room they needed against their newly promoted opponent. MPS carried the play for the most part--minus a ten minute lull halfway through the opening stanza.

Emeka provided the finishing touch to an overall solid first half with a world class volley from the top of the box. It was another well worked goal initiated by some enterprising play from right back Joe Bradley.

You'd be hard pressed to find any highlights from the second half, as MPS prenty much closed up shop, happy to settle for a rather dour second half, while collecting three points and a shutout.

This week's MOM Award goes to Emeka Iheme who enjoyed an excellent all around performance in the middle of midfield--punctuated by a real collector's item of a goal.

Duxbury, MA--Last Monday's RSVP email was greeted with a plethora of "in" responses. MPS Over 30, besides being an excellent Over 30 team, remain in many ways the most predictable team in the league. Each Sunday morning brings these many quirky behaviors to light. For example, watching Andrew's punts try to make their way to midfield like a young bird jumping from the nest for the first time, or James screaming for the ball 70 yards away while you have 5 other easier options available, it brings a tear to my eye each time I watch an MPS player make a run into scoring position, thinking, "this is the time Ron is going to pass it to me", who doesn't enjoy watching Markens cut in when an early cross is clearly the right play, or watching Wes go through a 30 minute Catz warmup only to be exhausted for the opening kickoff.

This week was greeted by the most predictable MPS behavior of all--the bailout on driving to Duxbury for an 8:30 am kickoff. Being an elementary school teacher has clearly prepared me for dealing with a multitude of outstanding excuses over the years, however--none compare with the quantity and quality that this fixture produces. When it was all said and done, twelve brave souls made the trip to exit 11 and left with another three points, courtesy of the calmest of finishes by Andy Apstein.

Looking sharp in their black strips, MPS almost totally capitulated in the opening fifteen minutes. Diabolical defending, attempted telepathic communication, and a lack of fire in the belly lead to an early 1-0 deficit. Thankfully, it didn't take much longer for MPS to find their footing and claw their way back into the game. A well worked counter attack was finished by Bjorn care of an astute Phontip pass. The 1-1 scoreline at halftime gave the visitors hope.

The second half found MPS clearly on the front foot as they took hold of the game. An outstanding finish from Andy provided the final scoreline, with several other scoring chances being produced before the final whistle. The defending, though not textbook, was enough to secure the points, with goaltender Chris Hamblin looking the part in goal.

This week's MOM Award goes to Andy Apstein, who the bookies had at 1,000-1 after the first fifteen minutes for this week's MOM Award Winner. The spring's Most Improved Player continued his knack of starting off slow and finishing strong.

Wayland, MA--The 2009 fall campaign finally got under way this past Sunday at Alpine Field in Wayland. MPS's opening fixture against Concord was rescheduled due to weather conditions.

MPS started brightly in a 4-5-1 alignment, with Patrick McCabe leading the line as a lone striker. After a back and forth opening sequence, MPS settled into a comfortable pattern of dominating possession for long spells. A lack of sharpness in and around the penalty box lead to few real clean cut scoring opportunities. The first half ended 0-0.

The second half found MPS converting to a more traditional 4-4-2. The addition of a second striker gave MPS's attack more bite. James Proctor was a handful for Rovers throughout from the right side of midfield. Eventually MPS found the back of the net thanks to a superb cross from Markens and a header from James of equal quality. James's second goal was the result of some fine MPS interplay with Bjorn providing the incisive pass.

It was well rounded performance against a lively Rovers side that has made some nice additions to their squad.

MPS Over 30 Celebrate Successful Spring and Summer

Boston, MA--MPS Over 30 enjoyed their Awards Night out on the town. Wednesday night's festivities marked the end of an extremely successful spring and summer campaign. Several individual awards were presented, but we all know it was a total team effort as MPS Over 30 captured the Division I Championship, their first Over 30 Veterans Cup Championship, while half the squad helped propel MPS Over 40 to a Veterans Cup Championship as well.

With 18 members of the squad still bunkered in at Sonsie at 12:45 am, the night had to be categorized an overwhelming success.

MPS Over 30 and Over 40 Capture Veterans Cup Championships

Lancaster, MA--Five days and nine games later MPS Over 30 and Over 40 managed to complete a magnificent double this morning in Lancaster. A grueling week of soccer saw MPS go undefeated in all nine matches played.

MPS O30 started the festivities with a comprehensive 2-0 victory against International Toons out of Pittsburg, PA. A first half goal from Bjorn Hansen and second half strike from Mark Manganello sealed the O30 Championship.

MPS O40 worked hard to match their younger teammates achievement in the following match. World Soccer International fielded a strong side with plenty of subs available. MPS O40 were forced to play with a somewhat depleted lineup and struggled to match World Soccer's quality. Thankfully, MPS O40's stubbornness paid off. With ten mintes left a goalkeeping blunder gifted Steve Nicol an opportunity he calmly dispatched. The single goal was all MPS O40 needed, as they held on for a gritty 1-0 O40 Championship result.

MPS Capture Over 30 Championship

MPS Wins Division I Championship in PK's after Patrick McCabe's 88th minute equalizer

Lexington, MA--The soccer gods were smiling on MPS Over 30 yesterday afternoon at Lincoln Field in Lexington. The opening fifteen minutes against Braintree in the Division I Final found MPS in fine form. MPS created several first class scoring opportunities that could have changed the tone of the match. Unfortunately, the next fifteen minutes saw Braintree convert their only real opportunity of the half for a 1-0 lead. It went from bad to worse as Dan Rudolph collected his second yellow card of the half, leaving his teammates to fight on for the remaining sixty minutes with ten men. A Braintree own goal, forced by Ken Risley off an MPS free kick outside the box earned MPS a more than deserved 1-1 scoreline at halftime.

The second half was controlled by MPS. Playing in a 4-3-2 setup, with Tony D' Angelo controlling the middle of the park, MPS pushed for a second goal. A Braintree attack in the 35th minute lead to a corner kick. The ensuing corner was thumped home by a towering Braintree header for 2-1. Many teams would crumble after such a timely goal. However, as has been stated many times, MPS Over 30 is a group of stubborn, successful, never say die men, who once again clawed their way out of the abyss. Patrick McCabe's late near post finish from a Bjorn Hansen cross leveled the score at 2-2 in the 88th minute. It was more than deserved as MPS had thrown caution to the wind going forward in search of an equalizer.

MPS managed to win the resulting penalty kick shoot out with Patrick again coming up big, as he converted MPS's seventh pk to clinch the Division I Championship for MPS. The entire squad was unbelievable throughout the 90 minutes and PKs as everyone's sole concern was getting a result.

MOM Award: If you don't win the MOM Award for scoring the late equalizer and making the winning PK there is something the matter. Patrick McCabe is the MOM Award winner this week. What more is there to say? Everyone fought to the end and sacrificied playing time for the common good, on this day however, there can be no arguing over the Man of the Match. Congratulations Patrick!

Weymouth, MA--A beautiful Sunday morning in Weymouth was the setting for Crafty Veterans relegation from Division I South today. The team formerly known as Sarsfields has always been a thorn in MPS's side. A big strong competitive group, they were never afraid to put a foot in or have a word with the referee. Unfortunately, they only had ten men this morning giving the match a predetermined feel.

MPS opened up in a 4-4-1-1 alignment. More than a few eyebrows were raised when the manager assigned a free role to Kevin Wylie behind deep lying striker Patrick McCabe. Within the first 10 minutes the manager's decision was validated as Kevin scored the opening goal. The rest of the half was a bit stop start, as Patrick amassed a remarkable nine offsides calls. John Garofalo would have been proud.

The second half was a more lopsided affair as MPS scored four more goals. The 5-0 scoreline was tarnished by a well taken Crafty Veterans' goal, assisted by an errant MPS pass out of the back. Overall, the postmatch beers and lunch taken in by Andrew, Sean, Patrick, and Ken one exit further south on Route 3, were far more enjoyable than the actual game!

MPS Over 30 Complete Undefeated Week

Wayland, MA--It has been an eventful week for MPS Over 30. A 5-3 victory on Tuesday at Wayland High School was overshadowed by a neck injury to Tony Lage in the closing minutes. It was an unfortunate accident, but thankfully all indications are that Tony should make a full recovery.

The game itself was also eventful. A 0-0 scoreline at halftime would leave the neutral wondering whether the second half was worth staying. Eight goals later MPS had secured three points.

It was a spirited affair. Rovers opened the scoring off a very questionable cross field pass from MPS. The response was immediate and devastating for Rovers. Tuesday night's MOM Award winner, Ron Murphy, scored his first of two goals to equalize. Shortly after, Dan R scored a superb goal to put MPS ahead 2-1. Rovers scored two world class goals of their own in the second half while pushing MPS to the limit. However, when the final whistle blew MPS had done enough to secure another three points.

Wayland, MA--MPS Over 30 ground out an excellent 2-0 result this morning against Bohemians. A thirty man roster was barely enough, as MPS started the game with ten players. Kevin Aylett remains deep in the manager's dog house, as his 9:15 am arrival and 10: 15 am departure was just enough to help MPS work their way through a hard fought contest. Joe Bradley's arrival for the final 25 minutes was more than timely and appreciated.

The game itself found MPS on the back foot for the opening 10 minutes. Playing a 4-4-1 as they waited for Kevin to arrive, MPS eventually managed to settle into a comfortable rhythm. Sunday's MOM Award winner, Philip VanderWilden helped the back four provide a solid platform for the rest on the team to build from. Kevin A eventually arrived and slotted in on the right side of midfield. He was enjoying a pretty anonymous performance before scoring a brilliant goal, putting MPS ahead 1-0. A lead they took into halftime.

The second half was a clinical team performance. With no subs and six of their eleven players over 40 years old, MPS stayed compact and composed. The one goal would have been enough, however Kevin Wylie had other plans. Bjorn's perfectly weighted corner kick was smashed into the Bohs goal with a powerful header. It was an exclamation point on a solid team effort.

MPS Over 30 Veterans Complete Clinic in Concord

Concord, MA--New young players always refresh any squad, MPS Over 30 is no different. However, this morning in Concord, MPS senior squad members put on a soccer clinic against an up and coming Concord side. The most noticable difference in MPS's play this morning was how quickly the ball zipped around. A lack of individual players dwelling on the ball combined with no stubborn insistence on solving the problem oneself was a refreshing change in MPS's play.

An early MPS goal instilled confidence to a side already pinging the ball all over the park. Shortly after halftime Tony Lage doubled MPS's advantage, followed by a well taken Marken's goal. Patrick finished off the scoring late on to provide the final 4-0 scoreline. It was a ruthless team performance.

This morning's victory keeps MPS at the top of Division I South. In other news, Braintree scored two late goals to beat the Bohs 3-2 and Rovers defeated Crafty Veterans 1-0.

This week's MOM Award goes to the whole team. The squad of 14 enjoyed an outstanding day at the office, leaving little doubt that MPS Over 30 have a solid squad from top to bottom.

MPS Earns Away Draw at Braintree Celtic

Duxbury, MA--MPS Over 30 fought back from an early own goal, capturing a well deserved away point against their strongest rivals this morning in Duxbury. A relatively even first half of play was punctuated by an own goal that should never have happened.

Clearly, hindsight is 20/20, but there can be little denying an anonymous MPS center back was a bit casual in defending one of Braintree's busiest players deep in his defensive third. Mistakes at this level are still punished rather ruthlessly, and next thing you know a ball is played into MPS's penalty box and a wrong footed MPS defender slotted home into his own goal.

A goal of this nature would kill off most teams, but MPS Over 30 remain a stubborn, proud, and resilient bunch. The second half found MPS switching to a more traditional 4-4-2 which seemed to give the team a better balance. MPS dominated possession, while Braintree remained dangerous on the break.

Deep into the second half MPS earned a corner kick. The in swinging corner drew out Braintree's goalkeeper which eventually provided Ken Risley an opportunity to equalize with a clutch header. It was a justified result for 45 minutes of pressing for an equalizer.

This week's MOM Award has to go to Ken Risley. The goal alone justifies Ken's selection this week. A solid performance, Ken's goal provided MPS with a deserved point.

Rookies Making Impact for MPS Over 30

Westborough, MA--MPS's rookies Geoff Walker (left) and Tom Smith (center) made their season debuts for the first team this morning in Wayland. The manager was not discouraged by the fact he had to call them 5 times to make sure they were awake, as there are still several veteran players that receive early morning calls. Today's performances were encouraging, but not reflective of overall expectations.

Dan Rudolph (right) has played several games in this, his inaugural season of MPS Over 30s. His breakout performance last Sunday in Quincy gave a preview of things to come. It was the type of performance senior members of the squad have been waiting for this spring.

We are all looking forward to improved performances as the spring season progresses.

A Disappointing day at the office for a well dressed MPS Side

Wayland, MA--The curse of the MOM Award reared its ugly head this morning for MPS Over 30. Always a heated topic of discussion following any MPS match, the MOM Award is slowly approaching Sports Illustrated Cover comparisons. Last week's MOM winner, John Shue showed all the signs of having a howler prior to kickoff. Like most MOM Award winners, it obviously went straight to his head. A week of post match interviews and appearances obviously taking its toll. John's diva like arrival at 8:55 am sent off alarm bells in the manger's head. Thirty five minutes later John's morning of soccer was over, as he collected two reckless yellow cards, leaving his teammates to scramble for a result.

Crafty Veterans found themselves ahead 1-0 in the first 20 minutes. Diabolical defending in the middle of midfield by Markens and Tom Smith, making his MPS debut, left John S with an opportunity for one of his perfectly mistimed tackles. The resulting free kick was poorly defended, leaving MPS with what would soon turn out to be a mountain to climb.

In the end, MPS scraped out a point. MPS played 3-4-2 throughout the second half and dominated possession. The domination of possesion did not equate into a plethora of scoring opportunities, however, to their credit, MPS stuck with it for the entire second half. Ron's well taken free kick with five minutes left gave a lifeline, but another three points was not to be had.

There were no individual performances that warranted a MOM Award this morning.

ROCK HILL, SC -- Crystal Palace Baltimore defeated the Charlotte Eagles in Rock Hill, South Carolina this evening on second-half goals from veteran Val Teixeira and rookie Jordan Seabrook, and thanks to yet another clean sheet from 'keeper Brian Rowland and the Palace defense. The win sends Palace to the top of the USL-2 standings.

The first half provided plenty of exciting, end-to-end football for the fans, with each side generating multiple goal-scoring chances. Shintaro Harada and Val Teixeira were the driving force behind Palace's attacking movement, not only providing starting forwards John Nusum and Pat Healey with great service, but coming close to scoring on several occasions themselves. Palace looked the more likely to break the deadlock, but both defenses held tight and the sides went into half time at level-pegging.

The visitors came out for the second half with a renewed sense of purpose and began to assume control of the game, creating a multitude of chances but Charlotte were managing to hold firm at the back. But the introduction of Jordan Seabrook, Bryan Harkin and Dan Lader as substitutes for Palace in the middle of the half spelled trouble for the home team.

On 79 minutes, Val Teixeira moved up the left wing from inside the Palace half, passed the ball to Lader who laid the ball off to Seabrook. From 40 yards out Seabrook then used an overhead kick to find Teixeira making a crossing run from the left towards the box. The Palace captain beat his marker and flicked the ball past the onrushing Charlotte 'keeper Kevin Trapp to give Palace the lead with his second tally in as many games.

The Eagles nearly equalized three minutes later as Jorge Herrera followed up on his own free-kick but Brian Rowland pulled off a spectacular save to keep Baltimore's lead and the clean sheet streak intact.

In the final minute of regulation, Teixeira, Lader and Seabrook combined once again to seal the win for Palace. Teixeira fed Lader near halfway who then released Jordan Seabrook on a perfectly timed run. The pace of the rookie was too much for the tiring Charlotte players to handle as he took a couple of touches and put it past Trapp for his first professional goal.

Quincy, MA--A depleted roster, uneven playing surface, and warm conditions were not enough to deny MPS Over 30 another 3 pts this morning against a determined Bohemians side. MPS struggled to match the Bohs sense of urgency throughout the opening half. The 1-0 scoreline was justified as MPS struggled to find a good tempo and worked towards matching the Bohs commitment.

The second half found MPS again rallying for the cause. A key catalyst was Dan Rudolph in the center on the park. Dan put in a strong second half shift, which the Bohs had no answer for as the minutes ticked away. An early Wes goal, assisted by Dan, put MPS back into contention. Shortly afterwards, Markens awkward cross from the right found the upper 90 and vaulted MPS into a 2-1 lead. MPS were able to see the game out from there and collect another 3 pts.

This week's MOM Award goes to John Shue who was immense throughout the entire 90 minutes. Totally uncompromising in the center of defense, John was the outstanding player for MPS. Dan Rudolph, Joe Bradley, and Andrew Tucker were also instrumental to MPS's success this morning.

John, 33, spent the 2008 season with Miami FC of the United Soccer Leagues First Division after signing with the club last May. A member of the Trinidad and Tobago National Team, John spent four seasons in New England (2004-07) and started for the Revolution in both the 2006 and 2007 MLS Cups. In 75 career appearances – including 71 starts - John recorded one goal and two assists, with his only goal coming in the 2004 MLS Cup Playoffs.

BALTIMORE, MD -- Crystal Palace Baltimore eased to a 2-0 victory over the visiting Bermuda Hogges at UMBC Stadium Friday night on goals from Dan Lader and Val Teixeira.

Palace, who had the advantage of a game under their belts already, looked the more confident team on the ball while Bermuda, making their season debut, lacked cohesion.

Within the first quarter of an hour, Palace created half a dozen chances and the pressure eventually paid off. On 16 minutes, left back Mateus dos Anjos sent a long pass from his own half to onrushing forward Dan Lader. Hogges’ ’keeper Timothy Figureido came out of his goal to try and intercept but Lader got to the ball first and steered it goalwards to give Palace the lead and their first goal of the season. Figureido landed awkwardly on the play and, after several minutes of treatment, had to be replaced by Jason Williams.

Palace continued their dominance through the rest of the half with chances falling to a host of Baltimore players. Bermuda didn’t produce their first real threat until injury time with Damico Coddington forcing Brian Rowland into his first save of the match.

Palace kept piling on the pressure as the second half got underway and soon the lead had doubled. Shintaro Harada’s 51st minute free kick from the right was met by Val Teixeira who coolly headed home from 8 yards out.

Bermuda came into the game more as the second half progressed but the Palace defense held strong, restricting the Hogges into mostly speculative long-distance efforts. Palace’s best chance for a third goal fell to former Hogge John Barry Nusum, who made his Palace debut entering the contest as a substitute on 62 minutes. Nusum rose to meet Val Teixeira’s pinpoint cross from the left wing but somehow sent his header wide of the far post.

Wayland, MA--MPS Over 30 and Rovers FC bring out the best and worst in each other when they meet. Rovers are a physical united side, looking to crack into the top two of Division 1 South. MPS have a target on their back, having to respond week in and week out to the pressure of matching their opponents intensity. Today's match provided a glimpse into each side's plight.

Rovers started well, scoring an impressive 30 yard drive to go ahead 1-0. MPS responded with Alex Zecca acting as provider for MPS's equalizer. The 1-1 scoreline was an accurate reflection on the opening half of play.

The second half saw MPS establish themselves a bit more. Dan Rudolph's goal off a keeper rebound was clinically dispatched for 2-1. Rovers were on the ropes and a third goal would have killed off the game. However, Rovers had other plans and equalized against the run of play. At 2-2 the game was certainly there for either team. We all know Ron specializes in game winning goals, and today was no different. Andy Apstein sprung Ron with a superb pass, you know the rest, 3-2 MPS. Murphy VanderVelde sealed the 3 pts for MPS with a series of world class saves.

It was a hard fought match between two competitive groups of players. Hopefully, both teams were able to leave the testosterone induced verbal exchanges on the field and enjoy the rest of their Sunday afternoons.

It was a good result for MPS against a side that is going to be in the running for a playoff berth this spring.

There's little you can criticise Kenny Dalglish for but if Nicol was a different type of person he would have a voodoo doll of the great man and a standing-order with a pin factory. If Nicol had stuck to his position, he might now be acclaimed as the greatest full back ever to kick a ball. However, Dalglish, recognising that this was a player of monumental ability, shifted him around the pitch, filling holes wherever they cropped up. It worked for the side because Nicol could play anywhere. In 1989 he was footballer of the year. That season he played six different positions. He was that good.

MPS Lose Fall MVP to ACL Injury

Westborough, MA--In a definite worst case scenario for both MPS Over 30 and Danny Caldicott, doctors have confirmed the Fall MVP has ruptured his ACL. The news is devastating for Danny, one of the hardest working players in the squad.

Final details regarding Danny's treatment and care are currently unavailable. However, the club has been in constant contact as he works through this difficult period.

After consulting with several specialists, Manager Carey has tentatively scheduled Danny's return to First Team Over 30 action for Week 5 of the Fall season.

Westborough, MA--Salem United has acquired John Garofalo on a season's long loan agreement, with the player holding the option on making it permanent. The prospect of having to battle for playing time up front seems to be the catalyst behind the move.

This loan makes MPS Over 30's new smoking ban obsolete while taking the pressure off certain members of the squad to reup on their Vemma contracts. Dan R and Geoff W are sure to offset the 5-10 offsides calls John was responsible for each game. While always a popular player within the squad, many will question his motives behind a move to Division 2 North.

Concord, MA--MPS Over 30 opened up their 2009 campaign with a hard fought 1-0 victory in Concord today. Concord United proved to be a welcome addition to Division 1 South, as they fought to the end in this morning's match. MPS is always a dangerous team when they have the ball, however, they are at their best when working hard to pressure the other team. There was a distinct lack of urgency in that regard this morning, which gave the Concord squad a sense of belief they had not earned in the first half.

Thankfully for MPS, they found that extra gear during the second half. Confident on the ball, and fighting to get it back, MPS dominated the second 45 minutes. James Proctor's late finish provided MPS with a deserved 1-0 result.

Marlborough, MA--MPS Over 30s enjoyed another tightly contested scrimmage tonight in Marlborough. The pressure for playing time come the spring was palpable as players worked to force their way into the first XI. In tonight's match the older members of the squad scrambled back and forced their way into a 6-6 final, with Phil scoring a superb goal in the closing moments to equalize.

Experience played a major role in the opening exchanges as the veteran's manipulated their way into a 4-2 advantage. Unfortunately, fitness and age became a factor as the younger members of the squad fought back into a 6-4 lead. A late Andy A goal made it 6-5 before Phil's goal provided the final scoreline. Overall, a fair result.

Wayland, MA--The final weekend of the Fall regular season found MPS hosting Division 1 newcomers Holliston. The visitors have struggled with the demands of Division 1 as they sit at the bottom of the table.

The 4-0 scoreline is an accurate reflection of the ease of MPS's victory. Danny opened up the scoring with a powerful header from a Markens cross. Not long after Andy's quick reactions provided the second. The Holliston goalie saved Andy's initial left footed drive, unfortunately for him, Andy pounced on the rebound firing in a right footed volley.

The second half saw two more clinical finishes, one from John and Ron each. Overall, it was a comfortable run out for the Division 1 league leaders as they prepare for their Semi Final Match next Sunday versus Seacoast.

Duxbury, MA--MPS Over 30s made the long ride down Route 3 to Exit 11 for their 8:30 am kickoff against Braintree Celtic this morning. Frost greeted both sides as they prepared for another battle on Lincoln Field.

MPS’s top three scorers were missing from their game day squad of fourteen. With that in mind, MPS opened up in a 4-5-1, deciding to flood the midfield and dominate possession. The early return on the tactical decision was positive, as MPS though not extremely dangerous, controlled the play for long stretches. A superb counter attack started by Patrick and culminating with a vintage Wes run before slotting for Ken Risley to finish near post gave MPS a well deserved 1-0 lead at half-time.

Braintree responded to their playoff chances slipping away and came out strong for the second half. MPS struggled to match Braintree’s back to the wall intensity. Taking advantage of MPS’s inability to clear its defensive third , Braintree found their equalizer within the first 15 minutes of the second half.

The final thirty minutes found both teams creating opportunities for a winner. The 1-1 final was a fair result for an entertaining game.

Overall, MPS’s entire squad enjoyed a solid, if unremarkable performance. Brett enjoyed a strong showing at outside back and Andy A showed glimpses of the good form from his inaugural season in the spring. The only other occurrence of note was Markens being one of the first players to arrive, which means he must have forgot it was daylight savings.

MPS Lambaste Lexington 4-0

Wayland, MA--A last minute change of venue didn’t stop MPS from mowing over Lexington 4-0 this morning at the Town Hall field in Wayland. Field conditions at Alpine forced the site change, with special thanks to Lexington for their willingness to get the game played.

Once the proceedings got under way there was only going to be one winner. MPS struggled to keep a high tempo to their play but still easily outclassed their opponents. Danny’s goal opened the scoring for MPS, as his diligent worked provided a 1-0 lead. Shortly afterwards Patrick scored the goal of the bunch, a classy outside of the left shot rising into the upper corner. The 2-0 score at half-time was comfortable.

The second half found MPS being a bit careless, though they still managed two more goals thanks to Nick R and Markens for the final 4-0 scoreline.

This week’s MOM Award goes to Patrick McCabe. Patrick scored a fine goal and, subtract a bit of over indulging the heal pass, he enjoyed a strong overall performance throughout. The added pressure of finding a starting birth in the back four for the playoffs seems to be helping everyone’s performances.

MPS Over 30 Dismantle Weekend Opponents

Wayland, MA--Two different venues, two similar results as MPS Over 30 put a stamp on their position at the top of Division 1 South.

On Friday night a solid team performance was punctuated by five (5) Ron Murphy goals as MPS dismantled Braintree 5-3. The score line is deceptive, as this game was never that close. Within the first twenty minutes Ron had completed his natural hat trick. The first goal was superb all the way around as Ron finished off a confident Alex Zecca cross to open his scoring account.

Some fine individual performances were overshadowed by Ron’s Friday night goal scoring clinic. It was an impressive display and only served to reinforce what we all already know, you would be hard pressed to find a finisher of Ron’s quality at any level. Combined with his somewhat questionable outfits when going out, shaved legs, and impressive ability to self promote, and you have a truly unique talent.

There can be no denying Ron as Friday night’s MOM Award Winner. Congratulations Ron!

Sunday morning found MPS Over 30 facing off against Rovers at Alpine Field in Wayland. Rovers had enjoyed a solid start to their season and always use MPS as their barometer for progress. Unfortunately for Rovers it is back to the drawing board as MPS completely dominated throughout their 5-1 victory.

Rovers inability to solve MPS’s 4-5-1 alignment was painful for their fans to watch. The 2-0 half time score line was provided by a sublime Alex back header and a well taken Ken Risley penalty kick. Overall, MPS's fluid interplay and positive approach proved too much for a game Rovers side.

The second half was more of the same, as MPS converted two lightning quick counter attacks to leave Rovers adrift at 4-0. Careless MPS defending lead to Rover's goal before Nick slotted home MPS’s fifth off a beautiful pass from Danny.

Sunday’s MOM Award has to go to the entire squad. Two victories, ten goals, and complete domination throughout two games in three days isn’t possible without a total team performance.

MPS Hold on for Hard Fought 2-1 Victory

Marshfield--MPS made the long drive to Marshfield for a tricky away match against a rugged and unrelenting Sarsfield side. Field conditions have always been a factor in this fixture. Unfortunately Sarsfield's new ground offered little in the way of size or surface.

MPS faithful were surprised to see the side open up in an enterprising 4-3-3 alignment. The front three of John, Wes, and Kevin pressuring the Sarsfield back four. It was difficult for either side to settle in with so many bodies in close proximity. MPS certainly had some spells of intricate passing and clearly were the brighter of the two sides. That being said, it took a brave John G header off the break to open the scoring. MPS had to be pleased with the 1-0 halftime scoreline.

The second half found Sarsfield pressing throughout, a fine strike off the break providing their equalizer. It looked like an away point until Markens was unceremoniously hacked down in the box with five minutes left. Ken R confidently dispatched the penalty and three points were in the bag.

This week's MOM Award goes to the back five of Murphy, Joe, Phil, Dave, and Andy. Subtract Murphy's mind boggling decision to try and pass the ball across his goal line with a Sarsfield striker in front of him (You had to be there to believe it. We never would have mentioned that Lexington goal again!), great save by the way, the back five were solid throughout. Sarsfield are a physical bunch, the back five provided the platform for the rest of the squad to go about their business. It is a well deserved group MOM Award this week.
